Whether the class is being delivered online or face-to-face, each student is responsible for providing a USB cable to connect their computer to their Android device (unless the student is using an Android emulator exclusively).

When we are physically in the DDC classroom, you’ll have access to a large (24”–28”) monitor in the classroom for the duration of the bootcamp. (When the bootcamp is conducted online, it is still a good idea to include a second monitor in your configuration, if possible.) In general, the best (and in some cases, the only) way to connect to these monitors is via an HDMI cable. Each student is responsible for providing the necessary cable and adapter (if needed) to connect their laptop to the provided monitor.

Tasks

If using a physical Android device as a target for mobile development:

  1. Verify that you have a USB cable to connect that device to your development computer, and that your Android device is recognized by your computer when connected.1

  2. Enable developer options and USB debugging on your Android device. Different versions of Android, including manufacturer-specific Android distributions, have some slight differences here. However, start by reading and following the steps in “Enable developer options and USB debugging”. For further information, consult the online support documentation for your specific device.

If connecting to a second monitor for development:

  1. Review the video output ports on your development computer, and the input ports on the monitor you will be using. (As noted above, all of the monitors in the DDC classrooms have HDMI ports.) If these ports are not of the same type, you will need to use an adapter to make the connection. To identify the correct adapter, you may need to review the documentation for your computer; in most cases, this documentation is available on the manufacturer’s website.

  2. If you do not have the necessary cable/adapter combination to connect your development computer to the monitor(s) you intend to attach, it is your responsibility to obtain this combination.1

  1. We sometimes have spare HDMI & USB cables that students can borrow, but we cannot guarantee their availability.  2
